{"id":6622,"date":"2026-05-03T00:56:46","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T04:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sccpaaa.org\/?p=6622"},"modified":"2026-05-03T00:56:48","modified_gmt":"2026-05-03T04:56:48","slug":"3rd-precinct-community-meeting-april-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sccpaaa.org\/?p=6622","title":{"rendered":"3rd Precinct Community Meeting \u2013 April 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">3rd Police Precinct Meeting opened at 07:00 PM on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at the Brentwood Public Library, 34 2nd Avenue, Brentwood<br><br>Next Meeting: Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at 7pm at the Brentwood Public Library, 34 2nd Avenue, Brentwood which is a change of location (Originally Advertised to be at the Central Islip Public Library, 33 Hawthorne Ave., Central Islip, NY as was mentioned at the meeting on April 7)<br><br>Meeting attendance was approximately 40 Civilians and 4 Police Officers.<br><br>COPE Officer John Wright opened the meeting and welcomed all.<br>-   He stressed that items should be brought to their attention before the next meeting by calling the COPE Office at 631-854-8308 or 631-854-7333. This allows the staff time to research the issue and have more definitive answers to present.  John introduced the Officers in attendance.  He requested that questions be held until the end so that the meeting could proceed. Then he turned the meeting over to Inspector Mike Kelly.<br><br>Inspector Mike Kelly reported the following:<br>-   Eric D\u2019Agostino, the Deputy Inspector, and Capt. James Knoblach, the Executive Officer, were not present at the meeting.<br><br>-   The opening slide showed the latest crime statistics.  Year to date, there were 0 murders and 5 in 2025.  Burglaries are up in 2026 because Commercial Burglaries were up 122%.  Commercial Burglaries are up because of a change in the law which allows in some cases repeat shoplifters to be charged with burglar in lieu of shoplifting.  Rapes are down 83%.<br><br>-   Aggravated Assault was up in March in comparison to March of last year<br><br>-   Catalytic Converter Thefts are up in the precinct.  77 to date, with 219 in all of Suffolk. 3 to 4 subjects were seen canvassing neighborhoods for vehicles.  They were apprehended and it appears they were from the Bronx and traveled here for the crimes.  It takes approximately 60 seconds for them to remove a converter and flee.  <br><br>-   Commercial burglaries, 3 during February and March, by 3 individuals resulted in arrests.<br><br>-   An arrest was made on Calebs Path in Brentwood when a traffic stop led to the discovery of 2 Molotov Cocktails in the car.  The 3 persons were transported to the 3rd precinct for processing.<br><br>-   An SLA check at a restaurant in Brentwood led to  seven persons being arrested including the owner on narcotics related charges.  This was the result of surveillance triggered by community complaints.   Several ABC charges were also issued.  Weapons charges were added to one of the arrested. <br><br>-   A Reckless Endangerment incident started in Central Islip at the CVS store when a report of shots fired  was logged.  The victim and suspect had fled when police arrived.  A witness provided the police with the name of the victim and a description of the suspect. The suspect was apprehended at the Central Islip RR station.  The suspect had a firearm on him.  The victim was uninjured.<br><br>-   Attendees were shown a new scam going on throughout the country.  Persons are sent a notice that they have unpaid tickets for speeding, parking or unpaid tolls.  They are warned that failure to pay immediately will result in additional fines and penalties.  People are cautioned to read carefully to see that it is a scam and do not respond, but do report it to the police.<br><br>-   Due to the Iran conflict there is a heightened possibility of sleeper cells being activated and\/or people being radicalized.  There are now detectives assigned to the JTTF, increased patrols at religious institutions, more Officers deployed with long guns at parades and gatherings.  Anonymous reporting to crime stoppers is stressed during this time.  800- 220-TIPS (8477).<br><br>-   A Highway Patrol SITE unit (Specialized Incident Traffic Enforcement) operation in the 3rd Precinct  on March 5th, 18th and 31st on Suffolk Ave., Lincoln Blvd., Caleb\u2019s Path and Fifth Ave. resulted in 168 summons, 147 were for moving violations.  These targeted areas often result in improved traffic flow afterwards.<br><br>-   Upcoming Community Events: April 8 - BayShore Mall Coffee with a Cop; April 18 9:30-11:00 Earth Day cleanup Brook St. and Milton St., Islip; April 26 9:30 EJ Autism 4 mile run East Islip Marina; April 23-26 East Islip Fire Department Spring Carnival 30 E. Main St., East Islip<br><br>-   A shout out was given to the Auxiliary Police for their efforts in support of the 3rd Precinct in many non-enforcement areas, and asking anyone with the time to consider volunteering with them.<br><br>-   The Precinct Level Advisory Board (PLAB) was mentioned, with several members present, as they help shape the future for the Precinct.<br><br>-   The various phone numbers and social media sites were listed to contact the 3rd Police Precinct for non-emergency issues (COPE &amp; Community Liaison Officer 631-854-8308 or 631-854-7333; email at scpd.3rdprecinct@suffolkcountyny.gov; Suffolk County Crime Stoppers 1-800-220-TIPS; Suffolk Non-Emergency 631-852-COPS).
