3rd Police Precinct Meeting opened at 11:00am on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at the Brentwood Public Library, 34 2nd Avenue, Brentwood
Next Meeting: Tuesday, January 6th, 2026 at 7pm at the Brentwood Public Library, 34 2nd Avenue, Brentwood.
Meeting attendance was approximately 25+ Civilians and 7 Police Officers
COPE Officer John Wright opened the meeting and welcomed all.
- He introduced the other officers in attendance as well as the local politicians. He stressed that items can be brought to their attention before the next meeting by calling the COPE Office at 631-854-8308 or 631-854-7333. He requested that questions be held until the end so that the meeting could proceed. Then he turned the meeting over to Inspector Mike Kelly.
Inspector Mike Kelly reported the following:
- Mike Kelly conveyed that Deputy Chief of Operations, Vinc Maronski sent Holiday Greetings.
- The opening slide showed the latest crime statistics. Overall numbers are still down for the year. Murder/manslaughter is up this year to date, however, all are cleared (not open).
- Beware of Porch Pirates taking packages delivered to residents during the holiday season. Arrange to have high dollar value items delivered to where someone is home.
- An arrest was made in the robbery of a 7-11 in Bay Shore. The person had previously robbed several other 7-11 stores.
- An arson case at the Riley Fibbers in East Islip on Nov. 20 at 7:32pm resulted in the arrest of a patron who was asked to leave and returned with incendiary materials and set fire to the building. The person was charged with 2nd degree Arson and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.
- A search warrant resulted in 7 people arrested for various drug possession charges and other outstanding warrants 7 grams of crack, drug paraphernalia and cell phones were seized. This occurred at a sober house in Brentwood where drugs were being sold.
- Several burglaries were reported in West Islip, Brentwood and Central Islip. One was a suspected insurance scam and another an ex-boyfriend who broke in. An arrest of a shoplifter at the Target in Central Islip was upgraded to burglary as the person had been previously barred from the store due to a previous shoplifting incident.
- Catalytic Converter Thefts were on the rise in the September / October timeframe. The 3rd Precinct bore the brunt of these thefts. A suspected gang from the Bronx was using a stolen car with stolen plates to move a crew through the area and stealing catalytic converters. An arrest was made 2 weeks ago.
- An arrest was made in Brentwood of a person who was stopped by the gang task force and found to be in possession of a loaded weapon and wanted for assault.
- Two patrol Officers were cited for saving the life of an 8 month old baby in breathing distress in Brentwood. The hospital emergency room staff suspected opiate overdose and administered Narcan. This resulted in the arrest of the father as he had left a straw used for fentanyl snorting on the bed where the baby was located.
- A High Crash Location was the site of an operation that resulted in 50 summonses of which 42 were moving violations
- A participant from Bay Shore applauded the police for reacting to a complaint last month. A complaint of increased homelessness activity by the Bay Shore band shell brought the police to remove the homeless and allow a more peaceful downtown area. The police reminded all that this only forces these people to move to a new area. Homelessness is not a crime.
- A Shop with a Cop event was announced for up to 20 needy kids to receive things they could use On December 10 at Target.
- {Editors Note: These meetings are not only to report to the community what is happening. They are to get input on what the police cannot always see, due to non reporting. The precinct always reacts to what they hear at these meetings as was the case in Bay Shore by the Local Business Owners. The local politicians are there to hear how they can help give the police the “teeth” they need to enforce the laws. This is seen in the recent moves to help the E-bike situations.}
