- 3rd Police Precinct Meeting opened at 07:00 pm on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at the Islip Public Library, 71 Monell Ave., Islip
- Next Meeting: Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at 7pm at the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library, 1 S Country Rd., Brightwaters 11718
- Meeting attendance was approximately 27 Civilians and 4 Police Officers
- COPE Officer John Wright opened the meeting and welcomed all.
- He stressed that items can be brought to their attention before the next meeting by calling the COPE Office at 631-854-8308 or 631-854-7333. John introduced the attending local Political figures. He requested that questions be held until the end so that the meeting could proceed. Then he turned the meeting over to Inspector Mike Kelly.
- Inspector Mike Kelly reported the following:
- The opening slide showed the latest crime statistics. Mike Kelly preceded this with a report he received regarding possible ICE activity. Two Police Officers witnessed a gathering that was impeding traffic at the 7-Eleven in Brentwood. They spoke with the people involved and they disbanded, no arrests, no tickets, no one hurt, maintained business. Crime Statistics: Mike mentioned 2 robberies that were cleared by arrests, and 11 burglaries, 9 of which were Commercial and 4 have been solved. Commercial burglaries are up because of a change in the law which allows in some cases repeat shoplifters to be charged with burglary. Overall crime numbers are down for the year to date.
- Trigger Pulls on January 19 at 7pm in Brentwood, 2 juveniles in a car, drive-by shooting, one shot in the left hand and the other shot in the knee, gang related.
- Robbery on January 16 at 8:30pm in BayShore, cleared by arrest.
- Robbery on January 19 at 7pm at gunpoint at a gas station in BayShore, cleared by arrest.
- Burglary on January 19 at 4pm at the Macy’s in BayShore, cleared by arrest.
- 5 Aggravated Assaults in the Precinct, 3 cleared by arrest, 2 in BayShore and 1 in Central Islip.
- Traffic Stop on January 23 at 4:30pm in Brentwood, possession of metal knuckles, cocaine, heroin and a large sum of money, arrest made.
- An arrest via a search warrant at 21 Harrison Ave., Bay Shore yielded 30 grams of crack, money, cell phones, documentsand paraphernalia. 4 felony drug charges issued.
- A joint investigation preceded a warrant at Islip Ave., Brentwood on January 28 that yielded 25 grams of crack, currency, autos, and a handgun. 3 felony drug charges as well as 3 felony weapon charges were issued.
- Drug Overdose Analysis: 2025-132 fatal overdoses and 711 overdoses. Fatal drug overdoses were down by 21% in 2025 from 2024. Drug overdoses continue to plague the county, however fatal overdose deaths are coming down due to the Police Officers carrying and using NARCAN.
- A Homeless Outreach was conducted to assist the homeless in the current deep freeze. They were offered health counseling, drug rehab, and shelter assistance. Known homeless locations are checked regularly by the police to offer assistance in the cold spell.
- A Highway Patrol SITEunit operation in the 3rd Precinct on January 13 and 23 on Suffolk Ave., Fifth Ave., Sunrise Hwy. Service Road, Calebs Path and Fulton St. resulted in 104 summons, 89 were for moving violations. These targeted areas often result in improved traffic flow afterwards.
- Upcoming Community Events: March 1 East Islip St. Patrick’s Day Parade and March 14 – BayShore St. Patrick’s Day Parade
- A shout out was given to the Auxiliary Police for their efforts in support of the 3rd Precinct in many non-enforcement areas, and asking anyone with the time to consider volunteering with them.
- The Precinct Level Advisory Board (PLAB) was discussed as they help shape the future for the Precinct. The 2 year terms are ending for several of the members and new people need to be brought in.
- SCPD will not ask your immigration status during any call for service, including but not limited to: Victims of a crime, Car accidents, Domestic incidents, Aided cases, Landlord/tenant disputes.
- The various phone numbers and social media sites were listed to contact the 3rd Police Precinct for non-emergency issues (COPE & Community Liaison Officer 631-854-8308 or 631-854-7333; scp.3rdprecinct@suffolkcountyny.gov; Suffolk County Crime Stoppers 1-800-220-TIPS; Suffolk Non-Emergency 631-852-COPS). It was stressed that if you need immediate assistance, that you must DIAL 911.
- The meeting ended at 7:18pm for side bars and other small discussions with COPE and other Police Officers. The senior staff had to attend an inspection of another precinct.
