3rd Police Precinct Meeting opened at 11:10AM on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at the BayShore Brightwaters Public Library, 1 S Country Rd., Brightwaters
Next Meeting: Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at 7pm at the Brentwood Public Library, 34 2nd Avenue, Brentwood
Meeting attendance was approximately 20 Civilians and 7 Police Officers. Attendance was good, but less than would attend an evening meeting.
COPE Officer John Wright opened the meeting and welcomed all.
• He stressed that items should be brought to their attention before the next meeting by calling the COPE Office at 631-854-8308 or 631-854-7333. This allows the staff time to research the issue and have more definitive answers to present. John introduced the Officers in attendance. He requested that questions be held until the end so that the meeting could proceed. Then he turned the meeting over to Inspector Mike Kelly.
Inspector Mike Kelly reported the following:
- He introduced Eric D’Agostino as the Deputy Inspector, and Capt. James Knoblach as the Executive Officer.
- The opening slide showed the latest crime statistics. Year to date, there were 0 murders and 2 in 2025. Burglaries are up in 2026 because commercial burglaries were up 300% in February.
- A chart was shown with data that indicates there has been a year over year decrease in crime in the last 6 years.
- On February 3, 206 a CSU officer recognized a tattoo on a suspect that tied him to 5 burglaries in the area during January of this year.
- 2 arrests were made for aggravated assault ( menacing with a weapon).
- A pattern in jet ski larcenies was established and 19 additional charges were added to a suspects’ 9 existing charges. This was for a spree during the summer of 2024.
- While exercising a search on a warrant for a rape, the officers observed the suspect attempt to flee and subsequently arrested him for the rape and possession of a weapon.
- Fatal overdoses are tracking down. It is believed that this is the result of Officers and EMT’s carrying Narcan and less Fentanyl getting into the country.
- Due to the Iran conflict there is a heightened possibility of sleeper cells being activated. There are now detectives assigned to the JTTF, increased patrols at religious institutions, more Officers deployed with long guns at parades and gatherings. Anonymous reporting to crime stoppers is stressed during this time. 800- 220-TIPS (8477).
- Repeated/updated from last month, Drug Overdose Analysis: 2025-132 fatal overdoses and 711 overdoses. Fatal drug overdoses were down by 21% in 2025 from 2024. Drug overdoses continue to plague the county, but we are seeing an improvement.
- A Homeless Outreach was conducted to assist the homeless. They were offered health counseling, drug rehab, and shelter assistance. Known homeless locations are checked regularly by the police to offer assistance in the cold spell. This service is also initiated during hurricanes and other severe weather emergencies.
- A Highway Patrol SITE unit operation in the 3rd Precinct on January 13 and 23 on Suffolk Ave., Fifth Ave., Sunrise Hwy. Service Road, Calebs Path and Fulton St. resulted in 104 summons, 89 were for moving violations. These targeted areas often result in improved traffic flow afterwards.
- Upcoming Community Events: March 14 - BayShore St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and March 21 Brentwood St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
- A shout out was given to the Auxiliary Police for their efforts in support of the 3rd Precinct in many non-enforcement areas, and asking anyone with the time to consider volunteering with them.
- The Precinct Level Advisory Board (PLAB) was discussed as they help shape the future for the Precinct. The 2 year terms are ending for several of the members and new people need to be brought in.
- SCPD will not ask your immigration status during any call for service, including, but not limited to: Victims of a crime, Car accidents, Domestic incidents, Aided cases, Landlord/tenant disputes.
- The various phone numbers and social media sites were listed to contact the 3rd Police Precinct for non-emergency issues (COPE & Community Liaison Officer 631-854-8308 or 631-854-7333; email at scp.3rdprecinct@suffolkcountyny.gov; Suffolk County Crime Stoppers 1-800-220-TIPS; Suffolk Non-Emergency 631-852-COPS).
