Inspector Patrick Mahan and Deputy Inspector Peter Ervolina ran tonight’s meeting. SCCPAA board
members Alex Gutierrez, Kevin O’Hare, Rich Perez, Lauri Murphy and Robert Murphy were in
attendance.
The Inspector ran through numerous PowerPoint presentations that showed crime statistics in the 4th
precinct. He explained the trends for various crimes in the precinct. Total property/violent crime
decreased 1.6% compared to last year. (Year to date).
Traffic stop activity increased 74.4% in the precinct (Moving/Other) compared to last year. (again Year to
date).
There were 57 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the precinct so far this year which is an 8% decrease over
the previous year.
The Highway Patrol’s SITE Team again made 2 visits to the 4 th precinct. They are a specialized team that
conduct traffic enforcement on roadways that have had a large amount motor vehicle accidents. In
August they concentrated on Smithtown Bypass, Indian Head Road, Veterans Highway, Ronkonkoma
Avenue, Motor Parkway, Wheeler Road and Rosevale Avenue. The Site Team issued 132 summonses
consisting of 112 moving violations and 20 non-moving violations.
Fourth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a man in Nissequogue on July
3 rd . The man was driving down a driveway on Pheasant Run when his car left the pavement and
continued down an embankment. The car caught on fire and the driver was pronounced dead at the
scene.
On July 21 st a man was killed on Veterans Memorial Highway in Commack when he exited a tractor and
walked behind the rear of the vehicle which then rolled backwards and struck him. The man was
pronounced dead at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center.
A driving school instructor was arrested on July 29 th after making a series of sexually explicit and other
offensive comments to juvenile students during driving lessons in Hauppauge.
Police arrested a Lake Ronkonkoma man for driving while ability impaired by drugs after his vehicle
struck three construction workers , killing one and seriously injuring two. The incident occurred on
Townline Road at the intersection with Terry Road in Nesconset on August 10 th .
There were two bank robberies in the precinct. On July 30 th at the Smithtown branch of Chase bank and
on August 14 th at the Commack branch of Chase Bank.
National Night Out was observed on August 4 th . The Fourth precinct set up events at the Smithhaven
Mall. The event was well attended and successful.
The next community meeting will be held on Tuesday October 6th at the Nesconset Library. The meeting
begins at 7PM.
