Dear Alumni Members,

Here are the major February 2022 monthly statistics for the 1st Precinct which held its meeting on March 3, 2022:

272 arrests;

2 residential and 2 commercial burglaries;

13 stolen cars;

2 robberies;

23 drug overdoses, 4 fatal;

2 shootings, 2 males injured, 1 critically;

13 DWIs, and

55 drug arrests.

Stolen cars continue to be a problem with owners leaving the cars unattended, either running or keys left in the ignition.

Kevin McCaffrey, presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature, was in attendance.  He came over and told me about President Kevin O’Hare’s appearance together with Deputy Inspector John Hanley at a legislative meeting.  He indicated he was in favor of funding an additional civilian class in next year’s county budget.

The next meeting at the West Babylon Public Library is April 7, 2022 at 7 PM.

Bob Murphy attended the 4^th precinct meeting on 3-1-2022. The meeting was very well attended.

Deputy Chief of Patrol Romagnoli ran the meeting. He had served as the 4^th precinct Inspector but he announced at the start of the meeting that he had been promoted to Deputy Chief of Patrol. Congratulations to Chief Romagnoli, He has done an outstanding job interacting with the community during these meetings and will be missed. Best wishes to Chief Romagnoli in his new position.

The Chief introduced Inspector Dave Regina who will be taking over command of the 4^th precinct. Congratulations and welcome Inspector Regina. The Inspector transferred here from the Highway Patrol Bureau where he served as Commander.

The primary topic of conversation during the meeting was the numerous car gatherings in the precinct, specifically the Hauppauge industrial park and areas around the L.I.E. in Commack. Several people in attendance expressed frustration with the noise these gatherings produce. The chief stated that this is a high priority enforcement issue and many steps are being taken to resolve the issues. The participants of these gatherings are coming from New York City and neighboring states as well as Long Island. It is a challenging situation. The locations of the gatherings are announced on social media with little advance notice. The precinct is dedicating numerous resources in order to alleviate this situation.

The Chief stated that there has been an increase in commercial burglaries.

Chief Romagnoli again cautioned us to be careful when we go to the gym, etc. as there have been numerous vehicle break-ins where valuables have been stolen. Do not leave valuables, wallets or key fobs in vehicles.

An officer from the Behavioral Health Unit spoke about the unit. The unit works alongside social workers to assist in crisis intervention. This is a new unit that was formed in August of last year.

Here are the major January 2022 monthly statistics for the 1st Precinct which held its meeting on February 3, 2022:

287 arrests;

4 residential and 3 commercial burglaries;

24 stolen cars;

7 robberies;

26 drug overdoses, 6 fatal;

2 shootings, 1 person injured; and

10 DWIs.

A December 23, 2021 murder in Deer Park involved an 85 year old female stabbed to death in a family incident.  An arrest was made.

Assaults and shootings were up 14% in 2021 as compared to 2020.

Suffolk County Police Chief of Department Robert Waring and a representative of the MTA Police were in attendance.

The next meeting at the West Babylon Public Library is March 3, 2022 at 7 PM.

The 4^th Precinct meeting was held on February 1^st at the Smithtown Library.

The meeting was titled “Spotlight on Fentanyl” and was led by Inspector Michael Romagnoli.

The meeting started with Inspector Romagnoli introducing his staff that were in attendance.

Two 4th precinct officers shared with the group how they got started and highlighted some of their experiences with the Suffolk County Police Department.

Inspector Romagnoli then introduced Jason Byron, a member of the emergency medical training unit and 18 year SCPD veteran who gave an in depth and very interesting presentation on opioid abuse and in particular the overwhelming abuse of Fentanyl.

We learned how to identify someone who has severe opioid intoxication (overdose) and how to assist them with the proper administration of Narcan.

The attendees were each given a kit containing Narcan to take home in the event they are ever in a situation where someone needs intervention.

Questions were taken and it was a very informative and educational meeting.
